Transgender Survey

This makes me feel upset and uncomfortable. As a student leader on campus (CA), I have never had a transgender resident but have transgender friends on campus and they have been ‘beaten back’ from the normal hangouts on campus. The only locations on campus that don't present the possible sense of unease are Damietta and GSA meetings. I don’t want to be a part of the problem, but few people cannot control an entire environment.

What has been do so far and should continue happening is more dialogue on campus with transgender students and off campus activist/voices (eg Latinx poetry slams from this semester). Furthermore, there should be more surveys investigating the reactions of our transgender student population on campus in order to gauge success with implemented changes.

  1. What do the Damietta Center and GSA meetings do *well* in order to create environments where trans students might feel more at ease? Maybe some of those elements could be incorporated into other parts of campus and events?

  2. The Damietta Center and GSA meetings both host seminars between students on hot-button issues. The Damietta center more often interacts with more clubs on campus, such as Political Society after the recent election. Specifically, last year GSA talked about hosting an education series for a few meetings that would cover the history of cross-dressing. Even though this was postponed due to Covid, both Damietta and GSA take segways into serious conversations in order to introduce larger topics.
